Kevin J. Dorvil is an American composer based in San Francisco, CA. His music has been performed by world renowned ensembles including London Sinfonietta, ETHEL, and janus trio. Inspired by music for screen, his music often holds a programmatic element to it, taking the listener on imaginative journeys filled with impactful soundscapes.
Although Kevin’s composition training didn’t begin until his second year of his undergrad, he had been writing music since he was 15 with some of his earliest works including an arrangement of Pachelbel’s Canon for 2 violas, cello, and trumpet, and several original works for string orchestra.
A graduate of the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, Kevin has studied under Dr. Gregory Wanamaker and Dr. Jerod Sommerfeldt and under Dr. Shelly Tramposh for viola training. After a brief period working as the Librarian for the Empire State Youth Orchestra in Schenectady and providing arrangements and transcriptions of various works for students in the intermediate and younger stages of their music education, he began his studies for his Master’s degree in Composition at the Royal Northern College of Music, studying under Dr. Larry Goves and Dr. Steven Daverson. Kevin’s compositional training has included masterclassses with Gunther Schuller and Anders Hillborg.
